I’ve been receiving a lot of queries regarding career advice for aspiring public historians. I’m happy to respond to a certain amount of them, but now I’m swamped. Therefore, I am instituting a policy: I will no longer provide advice to you personally. I will, however, publicly answer more general questions posted as comments to this thread. This will reduce wear and tear on my inbox and also provide some public places to talk about general trends in the public history job market. Thanks.

Not looking for such advice, but maybe you could put up a small page of links to resources and put that on this blog? Might keep the dogs at bay for a while.

I have one, but I haven’t updated it in a while. I will make the link more prominent. Good idea, Russell.

Perhaps aspiring pubic historians would benefit from a run-down of what you look for when hiring new employees. It’s a quickly changing field with so many innovaive ideas and technologies. What are the expectations of potential employees at your institution, as well as in the field as a whole.
I certainly hope that ‘passion’ comes into play!
